Tour around Africa: Stage 61 - Galkayo-Abdullahi Yusuf (HCMR) to Mogasihu (HCMM)
MS Flight Simulator VFR Flight Plan
Previous stage - Next stage

At the bottom of this page you will find the download link of this Flight Plan (.PLN file)

In this VFR - GPS Flight Plan we take off from the runway 23R of the Galkayo (Abdullahi Yusuf) airport (HCMR) and fly parallel to the coast to land in the runway 23 of airport of Mogadishu (HCMM)

This was a transition stage in the tour with no special points of interest. Find below a short extract and screenshots of the main points of the route. In this journey around Africa I have used the Cessna 172S (Skyhawk)

Take off from the runway 23R of the Galkayo-Abdullahi Yusuf airport (HCMR).

Abdullahi Yusuf Airport (IATA: GLK, ICAO: HCMR), formerly known as the Galkayo Airport, is an airport located in Galkayo, the capital of the north-central Mudug region of Somalia.

During the 1982 Ethiopian invasion of Somalia, the airport was bombed by several waves of Ethiopian Air Force jets. The attackers launched bombs and rockets at both the runway and the anti-aircraft defenses protecting it, but missed their targets. The runway which at the time was in the process of being extended, was undamaged by the attack.

Like most of Galkayo, the Abdullahi Yusuf Airport is administered by the autonomous Puntland government. It has acted as a buffer zone between the divided city's two main divisions. Taxes collected by the airport authority are split equally between the Puntland and Galmudug administrations, facilitating relations between the two regional authorities.

On 25 March 2012, the facility was officially renamed in memory of the late Colonel Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, the former President of Somalia, who was born in Galkayo.

Leaving Galkayo behind.

The arid terrain will accompany us throughout the flight.

Coastal dunes near Hobyo.

Not my best approach to the runway 23 of the airport of Mogadishu (HCMM) in the sunset.

Mogadishu, locally known as Xamar or Hamar, is the capital and most populous city of Somalia. The city has served as an important port connecting traders across the Indian Ocean for millennia and has an estimated urban population of 2,610,483.

Mogadishu is located in the coastal Banaadir region on the Indian Ocean, which, unlike other Somali regions, is considered a municipality rather than a maamul goboleed (federal state).

Mogadishu has a long history, which ranges from the ancient period up until the present, serving as the capital of the Sultanate of Mogadishu in the 9th-13th century, which for many centuries controlled the Indian Ocean gold trade and eventually came under the Ajuran Sultanate in the 13th century which was an important player in the medieval Silk Road maritime trade. Mogadishu enjoyed the height of its prosperity during the 14th and 15th centuries and was during the early modern period considered the wealthiest city on the East African coast, as well as the center of a thriving textile industry. In the 17th century, Mogadishu and parts of southern Somalia fell under the Hiraab Imamate. In the 19th century, it came under the Sultanate of the Geledi's sphere of influence.

In 1894, the Somali chief had signed a treaty of peace, friendship, and protection with Filonardi of the Commercial Company of Benadir. The onset of Italian colonial rule occurred in stages, with treaties signed in the 1880s followed by economic engagement between Somali clans and the Commercial Company of Benadir, and then direct governance by the Italian Empire after 1906, British Military Administration of Somalia after World War II and the Trust Territory of Somaliland administered by Italy in the 1950s.

This was followed by independence in 1960, the Somali Democratic Republic era during Siad Barre's presidency (1969–1991). The three-decade long Somali Civil War afterwards devastated the city. As of the late 2010s and 2020s, a period of major reconstruction commenced. (*1)
