In this VFR - GPS Flight Plan we take off from the runway 05 of the Berbera airport (HCMI), fly westwards to the mountains and finally land in dirt runway 07 the aerodrome of Las Khorey (HCLA)

Find below a short extract and screenshots of the main points of the route. In this journey around Africa I have used the Cessna 172S (Skyhawk)

Take off from the runway 05 of the airport of Berbera (HCMI).

Berbera International Airport (IATA: BBO, ICAO: HCMI)(Somali: Madaarka Caalamiga ah ee Berbera) is an airport in Berbera, a city in the northwestern Sahil province in Somaliland. The airport was renovated and opened to international passengers on 20th November 2021.

The Berbera airport has a 4,140 m (13,580 ft) runway, one of the longest on the continent. The runway was built by the Soviet Union (USSR) in the mid-1970s in order to counter the United States' military presence in the region. It was rented by NASA at a cost of US$40 million per year, and used as an emergency landing site for the Space Shuttle from 1980 until 1991, when the government of former President of Somalia Siad Barre collapsed.  (*1) 

After a short flight to the south-east we reach the Golis mountains.

The Golis Mountains (Golis range, Somali: Buuraleyda Golis) are a mountain range in Somaliland. Also known as Qar Golis, they cut through the Togdheer region, and end near the Gan Libah.

The original meaning of Golis Mountains is a mountain range near Golis mountain, but since the Somali Civil War, the entire so-called Karkaar mountains are often referred to as the Golis Mountains.

The eastern part of the Golis mountains is sandy, with many mimosa trees, and in some places Aloe and Sansevieria ehrenbergii.

According to British Somaliland and Sokotra published in 1919, a large number of Zebu cattle were raised around the Golis Mountains for the purpose of taking Ghee. The meat and Ghee were exported to Aden in Yemen and the hides to the United States. (*1)

Overflying mount Shimbiris.

Mount Shimbiris is the highest peak in Somaliland and all of Somalia. It has an elevation of 2,460 metres (8,071 ft) above sea level. It is located in the Al Madow mountain range in the Sanaag region. SRTM data shows that its often-quoted elevation of 2,416 metres (7,927 ft) is slightly low.

There is no vehicle access. However, visitors can stay in a tent  (*1)

Las Khorey (Somali: Laasqoray, Arabic: لاسقُرَى Lāsqoray) is a historic coastal town in the Sanaag region of Somalia.

The Las Khorey settlement is several centuries old. Between the town and El Ayo lies Karinhegane, a site containing numerous cave paintings of both real and mythical animals. Each painting has an inscription below it, which collectively have been estimated to be around 2,500 years old. Around 25 miles (40 km) from Las Khorey is found Gelweita, another key rock art site. Karinhegane's rock art is in the same distinctive Ethiopian-Arabian style as the Laas Gaal cave paintings.

Somaliland in general is home to numerous such archaeological sites, with similar edifices found at Haylan, Qa’ableh, Qombo'ul and El Ayo. However, many of these old structures have yet to be properly explored, a process which would help shed further light on local history and facilitate their preservation for posterity.

Former president Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud (Siilaanyo) visited the town in March 2014 along with a delegation including then Minister of Health Suleiman Haglotosiye. The restoration of Las Khorey's industries, among them its famous tuna factory, as well as the planned construction of a hospital for the town was announced during the visit.  (*1)
