I have tried to maintain a user interface very similar to former versions so that it will take you almost no time to get used to it, however behind that layout almost all the code has been rewritten. It has been thoroughly tested by hundred or users during eight months and it has not known bugs, but if something is not working correctly for you feel free to report it to me.
Please make sure you read the user manual and the FAQ page before using the new version.
The main new features in this version are:
Maps make use of the Google Maps API, what means many advantages regarding the old fixed maps:
They can be zoomed in and out.
They can be dragged to better fit your area preferences.
Different layers can be applied.
Terrain/satellite maps can be selected.
They don’t need to be reloaded regularly but just updated, what means faster visualization of updates.
Maps, lists and band graphs are updated every minute, instead of every three minutes.
More options to select what you want (and don’t want) to be drawn on the maps, etc.
MUF ES world map available.
Option to show a layer with propagation predictions (10m to 80m bands) according to VOACAP model. This feature is very resource demanding and requires a good computer and fast Internet connection. Even so it's slow due to the complexity of the calculations and the volume of data. At its best it will take 10-15 seconds to load the layer when a maps is first loaded, so if it's too slow for your simply don't use it.
Options to filter by modes and propagation modes (VHF only).
Click on any location to get more information (DXCC, WAZ, WAC, etc.) on it.
Click on a callsign to get more information about it (HF propagation calculation, statistics, etc.)
QSO Lists and band graphs use the same color codes to show the source of the information.
QSO Lists and band graphs also show the callsigns of Supporter Users on a yellow background.
It remembers your selections from the last visit, provided that you use the same Internet Browser and that cookies have not been deleted on your side. If this doesn’t work for you then you have to check your browser configuration and make sure that cookies from DXMAPS.COM are allowed and not deleted automatically.
Distance units (kilometers or miles) configurable in the DXMAPS user login details.
Possibility to filter by a certain callsign (Only QSO/SWL involving that callsign will be shown)
Possibility to search a certain callsign, locator, IOTA or even a location (town, region, etc.)
And last but not least, the new
programming of the application should make easier to make changes and add
new features in the future.
So far both version 4.0 and old 2.8 are available, but as this means taking double of the resources of the sever I am not sure if the old version could be fully maintained forever. If during the high activity months (summer) the server is not capable of holding both versions running in parallel I won't have any other option than giving priority to the new version, so please get used to it as soon as you can. If you have some trouble using it report it to me and don’t forget to include screen hardcopies together with your reports.
Please make sure you read the user manual and the FAQ page before using the new version.
Server statistics show that in April 2017 about 80% of users are already using the version 4.0, so if you are one of the 20% who still prefer the old one I respect your decision of course, but I also ask you to respect my right to move forward and provide new functionalities to the majority of users of the maps.
It has been tested with new versions of Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari (IOS). Compatibility with older versions or other browsers can’t be guaranteed.
Have I already said that you must read the user manual and the FAQ page before using the new version?
